Rugrat Reads: This Is Not My Hat

My friend’s daughter just turned three. We throw a birthday party for her every year at our house, and it’s a wonderful tradition. Every year I give her books, since reading and being read to are some of my favorite things to do with my two girls. I usually give books that were the classic favorites of my family, but this year, I found a sweet book that is perfect for the 3-5 year old set.

This Is Not My Hat, by Jon Klassen. This book is a New York Times bestseller and has received tons of well-deserved recognition. It is a beautifully illustrated picture book about a little fish who steals a hat from a big fish. Each page tells the story, from the little fish’s point of view. Then, with each ensuing illustration, the reader sees what actually happens. Because of the distinction between what the little fish thinks will happen and what really happens, the story allows for a lot of talking and investigating with your little one. Instead of just repeating the adage that it is bad to steal, it’s so refreshing and helpful to have a story that allows an open-ended discussion with your 3-5 year old about what it means when people (or fish!) take things that are not theirs or to have things stolen from them. Our little three-year-old birthday girl talked a lot about how the big fish felt: “Angry at the sneaky little fish.” And how the little fish felt: “Scared and his ideas for hiding didn’t work.” And finally: “I’m glad the big fish is happy he got his hat back.” It’s a new classic that I wanted to pass on to you. It’s great for birthdays and for the holidays, which are right around the corner.
